Welcome To Temporary Residents

First off, a MASSIVE THANK YOU from both of us, for checking out our blog! Really, it means a lot to us so thanks for stopping by to visit!

About Us

Our life motto is simple: Follow your dreams.

Hi, we’re Lance & Mimi, full time travelers and digital nomads known as Temporary Residents. We have very few possessions and no home base. We’re not rich or famous. We travel on a 90-day tourist visa and move from Schengen to Non-Schengen countries, with our 2 cats, in an attempt to experience each new city as a local.

It all started with an urge to explore. For nearly ten years we would escape our cubicles for two weeks at a time, leaving our bosses to worry if we were going to come back or not. For nine of those years there was only one thing that kept us from escaping forever, that beloved paycheck. But one day while bored at work, something dangerous happened. We got an idea.

It’s strange to think of the internet as a tool for something other than it’s intended purpose; to argue with strangers on Facebook or posting Memes of kittens wearing cowboy hats and riding sharks. What if you could work online and get paid for working from home? What if home was anywhere you wanted it to be? What if your home changed every 3 months? It’s the kind of ridiculous idea that would get you locked up in an insane asylum, right?

How It Began

“The trouble with being in the rat race is that even if you win you’re still a rat.” – Lily Tomlin

It all began with that first step. For us, it was seeing it on paper. We simply wrote down our goals and began planning on how to go about achieving them. Suddenly with a step-by-step plan in front of us, the dream we had only talked about for years seemed possible. We both worked for Walt Disney Studios in Burbank California for many years before we quit our jobs and began working online.

We already had some experience creating websites and editing audio and video, for various personal projects, when a part time opportunity presented itself as a position for an audio editor with the option to work online. After a year and a half of a steadily increasing work load we realized that our dream was possible. We did the math and our monthly expenses were far more living in Los Angeles than it would cost to travel full-time. With that realization, we didn’t hesitate. It was time!

Our friends were happy for us and our families began to think of things to worry about. The owner of the store where we bought our wine cried a little but everyone knew we were passionate about traveling so it all made sense. We had been planning and dreaming of doing this for years and now that our dream was becoming a reality. We sold nearly everything we owned and we have one suitcase each for all of our worldly possessions!

I prefer to spend money on experiences than on material things. I can’t stress enough how freeing minimalism is. Truly. When I got rid of most of my stuff, I realized how much work goes into managing the relationship with it. Always learning, trying, failing, and enjoying the small stuff. I love music, people that make me laugh, Mexican food, macarons and singing in the shower.
